UT San Antonio Health Science Center among top 2% globally for research output

The University of Texas at San Antonio Health Science Center is ranked No. 94 out of 5,973 healthcare institutions around the world and No. 38 in the United States in the 2025 Nature Index of healthcare institutions for research output. This places the institution among the top 2% of health care institutions globally.

Nature Index tracks research articles published by health care institutions in 145 high-impact journals focused on natural and health sciences.

“Ranking among the top 2% of global health care institutions speaks to the strength of our scientific community and our commitment to improve health through discovery,” said Jennifer Sharp Potter, PhD, MPH, senior vice president for research and professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Health Science Center.

From March 2024 through February 2025, the Health Science Center published 117 research articles in Nature Index-tracked journals. Top categories include oncology and carcinogenesis, clinical sciences and biochemistry, and cell biology. The Health Science Center also collaborated with 1,674 domestic and international partners during this ranking period.

The University of Texas at San Antonio Health Science Center is one of the country’s leading health science and research universities. With missions of teaching, research, and patient care, its schools of medicine, nursing, dentistry, health professions, graduate biomedical sciences, and public health have graduated more than 45,000 alumni who are leading change, advancing their fields, and renewing hope for patients and their families throughout South Texas and the world.

In September, UT Health San Antonio merged with The University of Texas at San Antonio, creating a dynamic world-class institution with 40,000 students, 17,000 employees, and combined research expenditures of $486 million.

“Joining forces with UTSA this fall creates the opportunity to expand our impact and make significant strides in the understanding and treatment of some of today’s health challenges and diseases,” said Potter.
